We all mean to have a big nest egg that we are paying into for retirement and for our rainy day fun. We even mean to have an additional Emergency Fund that we promised to keep adding to and growing as a cushion, just in case the car break, the water heater leaks or someone loses a job.

But the truth is, all good intentions aside, sometimes the money just doesn’t stretch far enough to feed all of those savings funds and keep food in our mouths too. We need to find ways to stretch our dollar and find some free money to use to pump up those retirement and emergency accounts. Here are some tips on what you can do.

Start decluttering the house and start listing your stuff on sites to sell it. When you start looking around your home, you will find hundreds of items that are stored and not used on a regular basis. All of these items represent free money that can be converted into cash; Cash that is critical for growing your nest egg.

Pick up a part time job freelancing. If you are in business, offer your skills for an hourly rate to others. If you work at home, you can do the same thing. What are you good at? What comes easily to you?

Start selling a product. There are hundreds of direct sales companies or multi level companies that you can sign up with and move some product you enjoy and use to make additional side income. Maybe you have your own idea of a product you want to sell on your own. Any additional sales means more money for you to apply to your savings.

If the kids are out of the house and you live near a college, think about renting out a room to a college student or traveling professor. Its not a lot of additional work, but can help offset costs and add to your cash flow.

If you have a website and are familiar with online sites, look at affiliate marketing, ads on your sites and other forms of improving your cash flow online.

These easy ideas are ones that you can work on to start increasing your cash flow in a matter of a few days and with zero investment to a very small investment on your part. The most expensive part is your time management. It can be done and you will soon be watching the savings grow.

With so many people struggling in our economy today we have to wonder if our parents taught us enough about the best way to be financially fit. When you are making a lot of money, it is easy to spend it too, knowing that you can always get a new job or a second job to load up the savings accounts. Today everything is so different and learning how to be frugal and save properly is a challenge for many. We need to make a difference for our kids and show them how to be financially fit too.

Back in the day parents rarely showed the kids about money. Dad and mom made it, aid the bills and you earned an allowance. Here are a few things you can do to teach your children finance in simple terms.

* Let them know that you are saving money. Explain the reason for savings and share how much (a percentage) you put into savings and this is why they cannot have that new toy or a trip to the fast food place. Explain to them what the savings will be used for.

* Let them help you with coupon clipping and explain why you use coupons and how they work in your favors. Let them help find the products at the store. For older kids, show your kids how the shelf labels work and how to know what container is a better deal. Let the see you reading the grocery inserts and show them how to make lists of where the saving are.

* Track your savings through the week and show them how you transfer the money that you saved into your saving account and let them watch it grow with you. Make a game for them that they more they can help you save, the faster the savings add up. The prize can be a dinner out or a day a the beach or something they would like.

* If you bank online show them how it works and how you track your money. They don’t need to know everything about what you make, but you can show them the basics of money management and budgeting.

* Encourage them to have their own savings account and show them how fast it can grow by saving a certain amount each week or month, depending on their allowance, etc.

Take some time out with your children and show them how they can help the family too. Each age is different for learning so make it fun but continue to share as much as you can with them so they can grow up to be financially fit with saving as second nature.

We have looked at a few different ways to help with reducing your debt. The snowball method and the highest interest methods are both great options for you to look at when selecting the best way for organizing your debt reduction. There is another method that has been proven to be effective when looking for solutions to reducing your debt.

This method is based on structuring your most pressing debt first. If you are facing liens, lawsuits or big Tax issues, focusing on these types of problems is going to help you reduce your stress right along with your debt.

The easiest way to work on reducing your debt for this type of structure is to Snowball your payments. Pay the minimums on your credit cards and other obligations and then take any amount left over that you normally would pay and add to it as much as you can afford over and above. Start paying as much as possible on the most pressing issue first.

As you pay off one bill, add the total amount you were paying on it onto the next most pressing bill and so on. Soon you will see your balances dropping very quickly as you get a hold of your debt reduction.

This is a good alternative to the other methods and of course choosing the one that fits best into your personal situation will be the best on for you. Don’t forget to start with your Emergency Fund!

As we discussed in our post about paying off your debt using the Debt Snowball method, there are other methods in which to tackle your debt. We are going to look at a different point of view today; the method that takes into account what interest rate is the highest.

As with any method you use for debt reduction and just in general, you need to have your emergency fund in place. Most people will tell you that once you have an emergency fund, the less you will need your emergency fund. It is kind of like a Newton’s Law thing.

With your minimum $1000 in place, you want to set about compiling all of you debt in front of you and the interest rates along with the amounts you are paying each month. Now there are a couple of different ways to tackle this debt.

One way is to look for a no fee zero interest card. Many card holders will run promotions for a year or more so if you can get a card like this, you can transfer your balances over. Some companies will charge a 2 or 3% transfer rate or a flat fee to move the balance; many cards charge nothing. It should still be a bit cheaper than paying the full interest you have now.

Just get the best deal you can and consolidate all of your balances onto this card and start paying it off as fast as possible using the original amount of money you were paying on your spread out card balances, plus any more you can afford. If you run out of promotional period, look for another low interest card and transfer again.

Another option is to just start paying the debt off using the Snowball Method but instead of starting with the lowest balance, you focus on the highest rate interest card or debt and snowball your payments.

The best way to tackle your debt is to figure out what works best for you and get to it. Track your progress and focus on how great it is going to be once it is done! Good luck!

More and more Americans are becoming much more aware of the amount of debt they are carrying, especially as fears of job layoffs and housing issues continue to be in the news. So many people are fearful of losing what they have worked so hard to achieve. They are now working hard at becoming debt free and being in control of their finances.

One of the proven ways that has been known to work the easiest is called the Debt Snowball. Popularized by finance expert and debt reduction guru, Dave Ramsey, it has become a popular method of reducing debt embraced by many. While this is not the only method that works, it is one that is easiest for a novice to finances to understand.

The Debt Snowball is in theory pretty simple. You first want to have your emergency fund set up before you start tackling your bills. This is something that you should have at all times and many people recommend at least $1000.

Once your fund is ready, start getting your debts lined up. The Debt Snowball uses the bill with the smallest balance first as the one to start paying off. What you do is pay the minimum amount due on all of your other debt and any excess money from the other bills will be added to the minimum amount due of the smallest bill to get that paid off quickly. Continue to do this each month until that first bill is paid off. Now you will see a winning situation very quickly! You will feel less stressed when you see results. It is the carrot for your situation.

Now that you have one paid off, take that same amount you were paying towards that debt plus any other amount you can afford, and apply it to the next lowest balance bill. This is in effect snowballing your payments. Gradually you will be increasing your payments to your debts as each one is being paid off and soon they will be completed. You can then move on to increasing the rest of your savings and into a more secure financial health situation.

Have you used this method? What are your thoughts on becoming debt free?

Deciding where to put your additional cash is sometimes a hair pulling decision. Typical bank rates are sad; the CD’s and Money Markets are just as depressing to think about. We can keep it liquid and not make as much or we can lock it up, make a bit more, but not have the access we need. So what are your options on where to stash your rainy day cash?

Savings Account: While these used to pay a decent rate, today you are lucky to get a half of a percent at most banks. They are great to keep your money close to you so you have access at all times, but actually growing your interest at a quick rate it not reality.

Certificates of Deposit: Many years ago, these were a good option to make a decent rate of return. While the rates have dropped, you can still find a decent deal now and then, especially for new money. The issue is of course, locking up your money for extended periods of time. If you have additional funds, this may not be a problem and would be worth some additional interest.

Money Market Funds: Similar to a checking account, these are enhanced checking accounts that will allow you to write some checks during the month and withdraw some cash too. Most banks allow up to 6 transactions per month. While you are not making as much interest as a CD, for instance, you do have more access than a CD allows.

Mutual Funds: Many mutual funds are being structured with portions of the cash available as liquid accessible to you as you need it. You can find funds that look and work like a checking account from your local bank. While your money is working harder for you at a brokerage or investment firm, your local access might be a bit more limited since you cannot go down to the corner bank and do business, unless your firm handling it located down the street. You may be charged access fees like ATM fees, so take that into consideration.

Keeping a portion of your money liquid verses locked up can be a delicate balancing act. It does take a bit of work to make sure your money is working hard for your needs too.

I don’t know about you but it seems like every time I watch TV I am hearing about another bank allowing scanned images of checks for deposit or a bank coming out with a banking apps for your smart phone. Personally that kind of freaks me out. Maybe I am in the minority but I don’t know who made that app for the phone. Is it storing vital information on my phone that can be accessed by others? Do you have some kind of security anti hacking software on your phone? I know I don’t.

What about scanning a photo of someones check? Wouldn’t that open that persons checking account up to unnecessary theft capabilities? The routing numbers and the account number is there for anyone to see providing it is compromised. I don’t think I would appreciate someone emailing a photo of my check out over cyber space. Is it secure? How can I be sure? How can you be sure?

I think we are getting lazier and lazier. It is that important to have everything at your fingertips that we give up the security of our bank or investment accounts? What if you decide to use your phone to transfer money and pay bill on an unsecured hotspot or line?

Personally, this trend is not for me – at least not yet. Not until I can see that my phone and tablet is secure and the app is secure too. Having my accounts compromised because I was too lazy to log on to my PC or go to the bank is not worth it to me.

What do you think? Am I wrong in feeling this way? Do you feel safe using Smart Phone banking apps?
